Period Impressions – Being Betsy Ross

Well, now that the first sewing camp session is over I am gearing up for my next big deal:  The hand embroidery workshop at the Bevier House Museum in Marbletown in which I will be dressed in period costume and being none other than Betsy Ross.  We will not be making flags (Betsy was so much more than a mere flag maker – she was quite the business woman – and ran an upholstry shop making all kinds of things for the new world women and up and coming merchant class.  Those  that had money to spend on the fabulous and blatant displays of wealth did so on fabrics to establish their places in society.  Most people could not afford these precious items so Betsy catered to the rich which became a slender rope to walk once the Revolution made imported materials a sign of your British loyalty.  Pictures will be forthcoming.
